总结
Okay, today I'm chatting with Terrence Tao, who needs some direction. Terrence, I want to begin by having you retell the story of how Kepler discovered the laws of planetary emotion, because I think this will be a great jumping off point to talk about AI for math. Okay, yeah, so I've always had amateur interest in astronomy. And so, I've loved stories of how the the astronomers worked out the nature of the universe. So Keepla was voting on the work of Copernicus, who was himself building on the work of Pistocchus. So Copennicus very famously proposed the haliocentric model that instead of the planets and the sun going around the earth that the sun was at the center of the solar system and the other planet were going around the sun. and Copernicus proposed that the orbits of the planets were plific circles. and his theory kind of fit the observations that the Greeks and the Arabs and the Indians that worked out.😊Over centuries.I think Ka got interested he learned about these theories in his studies, and he made this observation that the ratios of the size of the orbits that Krona predicted seem to have some geometric meaning. I think he started proposing that if you take say the orbit of the earth and you enclose it in I think maybe a cube, the outer sphere of that enclos the cube almost match perfectly the orbit of Mars and so forth. There were six planets known at the time five gaps between them, and there were five perfect platonic solids, the cube, the Tetrahsion, isoclusionion, octian and doocasian. And so he had this this theory, which he thought was absolutely beautiful that he could inscribe these platonic solids between the spheres of the planets, and it seemed to fit. and it seemed to be to him like, you know God's design of the planets was matching this mathematical perfection of the platonic solids.😊So he needed data to confirm this theory. And at the time, there was only one really high quality data set almost in existence. which was the so Taabbrahi, this Danish astronomer, very wealthy eccentric astronomer had managed to convince the Danish government to fund this extremely expensive observatory. This, in fact, an entire island where he had taken decades of observations of all the planets, Mars, Jupiter, every night of at least every night for which the weather was clear with a.N eye, actually, this is he was last of the of the naked eye astronomerous. And so he had all this data, which Kepler could use to confirm his theory. And so Kepller started working with T attack was very jealous of the data. He only gave little bits of it at a time. And I think Kepler eventually just stole the data. he copied it and had to have a fight with with brought his descendants. But he did work out. He did the data. And then he worked out to kind of his disappointment that his beautiful theory didn't quite work. Like the data was sort of off from his plaonic solid theory But know, about 10% or something. And he had all kinds of fudges moving the circles around and things that.It didn't quite work. But he worked on this problem for years and years. And eventually, he figured out how to use the data to work out the actual orbits of the planets. And that was incredibly clever, genius amount of data analysis.. And, and then he eventually worked out that the the ellipses, not circles, which was shocking for him. And then he worked out So he worked out the two laws of planetary two laws of planetary motion of the ellipses, also equal areas, throughout equal times. And then 10 years later,, after collecting a lot of data that the furthest plans like like Saturn and Jupiter were the hardest for him to work out. But then, he finally worked out this third law also that. That the the orbits the time it takes for a planet to this orbit was proportional to some power of, of the distance to the sun. And these are the three famous capital laws of motion. And he had no explanation for them. It was just all driven by, by experiment. And it took Newton a century later to give a theory that explained all three laws at once. Takeake, I want to try on you I that Kepler was a higher temperature alone, where Newton comes up with this explanation of why the three laws of planetary motion must be true. And of course, the way that Kepler discovers the laws of planet motion or figures out the relative orbits of the different planets is, as you say, a work of genius. But then, you know, he' through his career, he's just trying random relationships. And in fact, the in the book in which he writes down the third law of planetary motion. It's sort of.On the side on the harmonics of the world, which is this book about, you know, all these different planets have these different harmonies. And the reason there's so much famine and mystery on earth is because the earth is me for me. That's the note of earth. And so all this random astrology. But in there is the cube square lot, which tells you what relationship the.😊The period has to a plan assistan...(已截断)

N요 welcome on the show. Thanks, Chris, great to be back. dude,2019, episode 1 hundred04 all the way to now.I'm gonna take credit for all your success since then. was it was built. Is that okay. Was I the lucky charm. was built on a foundation of you and indistractible. That's exactly correct. new one, all about belief.😊Why is belief so important?Okay, so beliefs turns out to be the lens with which we see the world. And I had no idea how profound this research that's been coming out for the past several years has on our day to day lives. How beliefs shape what we see literally shape what we see. I can show the same exact image to two different people, and they will see completely different things. It's called the Ka illusion. You can look at this piece of paper. And I can show you to one person based on where they grew up. and and their priors, their beliefs, and they'll see circles. I can show it to somebody else based on where they grew up, They'll see rectangles. It's incredible. beliefss not only shape what you see.😊not not just figuredigative that actually shape reality that you see. They shape what you feel, your internal state. and most importantly, they affect what you do. And so everything comes upstream from these beliefs. And so you better get these beliefs right if they're going to run your life.我.I think one of the challenges people have when to hear the word belief is it gets perilously close to Rndaburn, the secret manifestation. You know, you've come from a productivity background, same as me. kind of hardcore, quite sterile, almost in a way, very sort of frameworks, rigid structures beliefief sounds very, almost whimsical as a topic to get into. You know, that that is a great point because there is a lot of bullshit out there. And so part of what I wanted to do with this research that I've done over the past six years for beyond belief was to really separate what works and what doesn't. And a lot of it, frankly, I'll give that crowd some credit. A lot of it works, but not for the reasons they say it does.that like, you know, I hate to verse anybody's bubble, but no, nothing is, is is vibrating and quantum whatever ring. And like the universe really doesn't give a shit. It is not, you know, the the the all the, the manifesting stuff., it can work kind of. And, and I, I do dive into some research around how turns out positive thinking can have a very negative effect if you don't do it properly. So I kind of wanted to dispel some of those myths. And yet.😊I've changed my mind a lot about a lot of stuff that I didn't used to do and I used to I'm very science backed you know all my books have pages and pages of citations to peer reviewed studies, I have to see the study not just it work for me but I need to see the peer reviewed studies that show that it work for others in a controlled study and so there's a lot of mythology out there even in the academic community to be honest there's a lot of studies that I look through that I thought we're kind of gold standard studies and you kind of dig into how they were done methodological methodologically and you realize oh they're kind of practice studies too.SoIt was a lot of sorting through the meat from the chat to figure out what we can actually practically apply to our lives. The good news is there's a lot of unbelievable research that has come out of the past several years that just absolutely blew my mind, for example, one thing.😊Is that we now know that placebos.Work even when you know they're a placebo.Which we didn't used to know before, right, we used to think that placebos had to have some kind of deception effect, right that you had to both people, the person prescribing the medication in a double blind control study had to not know who was receiving the placebo and the person, of course, receiving it couldn't know if it was a placebo.Turns out that's not true that you can get amazing effects. Ted Karick at Harvard showed this with Ibs S patients. He gave people a pill bottle that said placebos on it. By the way, you can go on Amazon today and buy placebo pills with five star reviews that say amazing how fast acting this placebo was. It's incredible. He told people, hey, this is a placebo. It is a completely inert substance. However, it has been shown to show to, to help some people with symptoms of Ibs S. Turn out it performed just as well as the leading medication. No, not only that, Not only that, wait, the story gets better. People called up Doctor. Capchuck ever afterwards and said, hey, that placebo pill was amazing for my symptoms.😊Can I get some more of those? So well you got to make sure it's the right brand of placebo pill, because if you change the strain, the gut microbiome won' respond. But I.Did it, it is wild. I remember reading a study about branded ibuprofen being branded painkillers being more effective than own label painkillers. You don't only get the CS own brand. You want to get the the neurooffen version of it for the same r...(已截断)
